A colorfully recognizable inhabitant in the city. . . Spot the urbanite mindlessly wandering about in bright reds that mimic characteristics of an outgoing and vibrant spirit. Catch mirrored glimpses of the glistening golden-yellow locks that joyfully play amongst the cool breeze. Speckles of brown that express self-awareness and stability of ones self can be found all over the subject; while polishes of midnight blue and purple depict a wondrous conscious. When encountered one on one, the favorite of all natives turns bright pink exposing a kindred and flirtatious soul that lies deep within the urban dweller.

ERODING

Decay brings mutation

On a microscopic level decay does not mean death, conversely it brings rebirth when surrounding elements interact with each other in new ways, influenced by different forces. This change brings a fresh new look. The so-called ‘perfect’ becomes dull, and the decaying matter once referred to, as imperfect will represent the best of perfection. We focus on the process of decay to display the changing appearance at each elemental stage and how this blends and relates to its surroundings.

Yarns:

Wool above all, fine merino to chunky roving wools, light but bulky or fine boucle’s, felted wools and nylons, thick wools mixed with finer counts, fleece with long hair mohair, feather yarns. Furry nep yarns and hairy yarns having a blister-like form or moss texture with a modern focus. A mixture and crossing of hairy, smooth, drape tape yarns.

In contradiction, metallic, matt & shine iridescent viscose and silks; satins silks yarns, velvety and matt chenille; wool and silk, mercerised fibres and iridescent yarns for a coloured mother of pearl aspect, Tencel.

Knits and stitches:

Super bulky and super chunky knitwear, sculptural ribs & cables, ripple stitch; oversized proportions in padded wools. Multi construction knits.

Jacquards, collapsed weave techniques, felting, irregular surfaces and soft handles; crushed surfaces creating decaying beauty, satins using stretchy input, high shine aspects and beadings. Smocking in knits, lace work, hairpin lace techniques, mesh stitches, patches of colours, strands, layers of multi-gauge yarns, combination of knit and fabric layers. Tucking, laying-in, e-wrapping textures with jacquards patterns, reversibility; layers of different yarns cut through to reveal all layers. Burnt edged, fringes.

Dark Wonder

Bold and profusely confident shades of blue promote productivity. Where sapphire blue is sincere and majestic, deep sky blue is calming and inspiring. Following in curious pursuit, blue-violets marvel at the unexpected. Emerald and mossy greens observe with good judgment and a sense of loyalty to the unknown. Rusty-browns and yellow-orange mingle amongst the rest: stimulating the mind to search for an answer to the inexplicable feeling of awe that is captured by the dark wonder.

ENDURING

Contrast brings normality

Inspired by the pressure of change and what we understand from the metamorphic strata of the earth and the incalculable geological forces transforming mineral matter. We take our inspiration from the folding patterns of hycernian processes, sedimentary fossilisation and other formative geological processes. Clay and chalks provide intricate microscopic patterns of encrusted jagged crystals with contrasting layered patterns.

Organic collides with digital, natural with man-made fibres. Marble and textured aspects are modernised by a range of soft stronger pastels and light matt iridescent metallics, creating layering of colours reflective of fossilised rock formations and the stratification of surface erosion.

    FEATURE | studio-842

1. The philosophy and approach behind the brand.
studio-842 started as a vintage boutique with a dream to create fashion with a positive impact. The collections mix deconstructed vintage with rare originals and new designs. Many pieces are one-of-a-kind and limited editions. At studio-842, we feel strongly about designing in a positive way for people and the environment. We usually don’t start with a piece of fabric but with a garment that we deconstruct. Most of my raw materials are vintage. The many months dedicated to make these delicate fabrics become a rare luxury in our fast paced lives.

The designer behind the label, Nina Dornheim began her career for the Zara group in Spain more than ten years ago and moved to New York to work for Kiki de Montparnasse, Jill Stuart and other fashion brands. Besides designing for studio-842, she is an ambassador for the NGO HechoXNosotros at the United Nations with the goal to make fashion more fair and sustainable.

2. What influenced your current collection?

The 2017 Collection is a collage of different decades with a strong influence of the Victorian era. Deconstructed tea dresses from the late 1800s become blouses with 1970s silhouettes, feminine 1920s and 1930s dresses are combined with oversized streetwear of the 1990s; draped mens shirts are mixed with reconstructed denim and vintage underwear.
Delicate victorian laces are combined with raw edge denim; heavy leather with luxurious silk charmeuse and soft velvet.

3. What are you currently working on?

Our upcoming collection in collaboration with Native American Artists and Artisans is continuing the search for fashion with unique stories. The goal is to empower local artisan communities, revive their ancient cultural heritage and create unique fashion that is completely made in America.

Below is a quick recap of their key print and pattern trends that the PV Fashion team highlighted from A/W 2018/19 season.

We recently went to Première Vision New York at Pier 94 on the 18 – 19 July 2017. It was a great show with all the studios and fabric manufacturers ready for the new Autumn/Winter 2018 /19 season. Whilst we were there, we took the opportunity of visiting the trend forum areas. Many thanks to our eyes and ears in New York and Patternbank Designer Alice Lam of Circlealine.
